Timeless Charm of Mechanical Watches
The beginning of the time keeping
machine was mechanical which was much before the battery powered machines came
into picture. With a simple winding mechanism, the watches could keep running
for about 35 - 48 hours. It too had a manual and automatic model where one was
wound by hand and the other had a self winding mechanism that operated when you
moved your wrist.
How far mechanical watches have come?
The history of mechanical watches dates back to almost the 1500s when intricate mechanical engines made of gears, springs, and wheels moved in harmony with each other. With time the engineering of watches have been tweaked and miniaturized to fit into your wrist perfectly with elegance. The birth of modern mechanical watches powered by batteries took place in the 19th century.
Working of mechanical watches:
The mechanical watch draws all its power from a mainspring which is a coiled spring that is wound tight by a crown in hand wound watches and by the help of a motor in an automatic watch. When the mainspring unwinds itself, energy is released and the needles of the watch start to move to show you the time. The energy is carried to the needles with the help of a series of gear trains to an escapement which controls the release of energy. Precious jewels like synthetic rubies were being used in place of the bearings of the watch to make sure that the wear and tear of components can be reduced as much as possible. These jewels reduce friction to greater levels and also help in the improvement of the accuracy and performance of the watch.
